Your drum head is your voice. Two drummers on the same kit can sound completely different just by changing heads β and that choice comes down to a few simple ingredients: coating, plies, thickness and damping. This guide walks you through every Wambooka series, from the most open and resonant to the driest and fattest, so you can find the sound in your ears.
The Basics β 4 Things That Shape Your Sound
The Wambooka Sound Spectrum
Every Wambooka batter head sits somewhere on this line. Move left for open, singing tones. Move right for dry, fat, controlled punch.

Open & Resonant β let the drum sing
Clear Batter 10mil
Single ply Β· 10 mil Β· Clear Β· Gently pre-dampened
The purest voice of your drum. Open, bright and resonant with plenty of attack, tamed just enough by a gentle pre-damping so it never gets wild. If you want to hear the shell, start here.
Best for: fusion, funk, pop, open-tuned toms, drummers who tune well and love sustain.
Warm & Focused β the studio sweet spot
Fabric 30 & Fabric 50
10 mil Mylar + technical fabric layer Β· Guaranteed for two years
The warmest heads in the Wambooka range. The technical fabric laminated over the Mylar rounds off the highs and thickens the fundamental, giving a deep, warm, almost calfskin-like voice β while making the head practically indestructible. Fabric 30 is the lighter, more responsive of the two; Fabric 50 adds a thicker 0.14 mm fabric for an even warmer, fatter hit. Both guaranteed for two years β yes, really.
Best for: jazz, blues, vintage tones, studio warmth β and anyone tired of buying heads.
Vintage Sand
Single ply Β· 10 mil Β· White coated Β· Pre-dampened
Our “sounds-great-out-of-the-box” head. The built-in damping kills the annoying overtones for you β no gels, no tape, no gaffer. Dry, warm, immediately record-ready. This is the head we’d put on a rental kit and forget about.
Best for: studio work, pop/rock, live sound engineers’ peace of mind, anyone who hates tuning battles.
Paso Doble
Single ply Β· Clear Β· Circular damping system built in
A clear head with a circular damping ring engineered into the head itself β the focus and punch of a muffled drum with none of the accessories. Smells like Nirvana, hits like it too: controlled boom on kick, focused crack on snare and toms.
Best for: grunge, alt-rock, punchy live drums, bass drums that need instant focus.
Dry, Fat & Loud β punch above everything
Hammer Tone
Single ply Β· 10 mil Β· Clear Β· Strongly damped
The name says it. Strongly pre-damped for a super-dry, fat hit with the brightness of a clear head still poking through the front of the mix. All punch, no wobble.
Best for: hip hop, R&B, metal, triggered/hybrid setups, tight modern productions.
Double Cheese
Two ply Β· 14 mil Β· Clear Β· No Bubblesβ’ sealing technology
Fourteen mils of clear film in two plies, sealed with our No Bubblesβ’ technology so the layers move as one. Strongly damped, seriously fat, and nearly impossible to wear out. This is the rock head.
Best for: rock, metal, heavy hitters, drummers who dent single-ply heads in a week.
Double Sand
Two ply Β· White coated Β· High durability
Double-ply muscle with a coated voice: warm midrange, solid low-end, big projection. The coating rounds off the top so you get power without harshness β the best of both worlds for loud stages.
Best for: rock, country, worship, loud live gigs where you still want warmth.
Special Forces β heads with a superpower
Mesh Head
Woven mesh Β· Sizes 10β³β24β³
Practice at midnight, trigger by day. Near-silent stroke with realistic rebound, and the best surface for electronic triggering on acoustic shells. Available for every drum in the kit, 10β³ to 24β³.
Best for: apartment practice, hybrid/electronic setups, teaching studios.
909 Leather Bass Drum Head
Double hydraulic layer Β· Harmonic Control System Β· 2 interchangeable curtains Β· 20β³ & 22β³
Two transparent layers with a thin film between them (the “hydraulic” secret) plus our Harmonic Control System with interchangeable internal curtains: dial the exact amount of boom vs. click your kick needs β from wide-open thunder to that tight 909-style thump.
Best for: electronic-leaning drummers, metal kicks, studio bass drum perfectionists.
The Resonant Heads β the forgotten half of your sound
The bottom (resonant) head never gets hit, but it decides how long your drum sings, how deep it speaks, and how much body the microphones pick up. A worn or wrong resonant head will sabotage even the best batter. Wambooka makes three dedicated resonants β pick by drum and by how much warmth you want.
Clear Resonant Snare 3mil
Single ply Β· 3 mil Β· Clear Β· Snare-side only
The thinnest head on your kit, built for one job: transmitting every vibration of the batter straight to the snare wires. This is where ghost notes, buzz rolls and wire sensitivity live. If your snare feels “dead” or choked, an old snare-side head is suspect number one.
For: the bottom of every snare drum, every style.
Clear Resonant 7mil
Single ply Β· 7 mil Β· Clear
The classic resonant choice for toms and bass drum: a thin clear film that vibrates in sympathy with the batter, giving depth, projection and a clear pitch. Pair it with an open batter (Clear Batter) for singing toms, or with a dry batter (Vintage Sand, Hammer Tone) for a controlled, studio-tight kit.
For: tom bottoms and bass drum front when you want the drum wide open.
California Sand
Single ply Β· 7 mil Β· White coated (sabbiata) Β· Resonant
The coated one. Same thin 7 mil sensitivity as the Clear Resonant, but the sanded white coating rounds off the highs of the reflected note: a warmer, softer, more vintage resonance β and a beautiful matte look on tom bottoms and bass drum fronts. The choice when clear resonants feel too bright and ringy.
For: tom bottoms and bass drum front when you want warmth, focus and a classic look.
Bass drum front
The front head shapes your kick’s boom and how it reads on stage: go Clear 7mil for open thunder, California Sand for a warmer, rounder boom with a vintage look, or the 909 system with interchangeable damping curtains for maximum control and modern punch.
